Left-winger Luisa Gonzalez is main in Ecuador’s presidential election, which has been overshadowed by the assassination of one of many candidates.
With almost 80% of the votes counted, electoral officers say Ms Gonzalez has 33%, whereas her closest rival Daniel Noboa, a businessman and from the is on 24%.
The highest two candidates will now go right into a run-off on 15 October.
Some 100,000 police and troopers have been deployed to guard Sunday’s first spherical of voting.
It follows the assassination of candidate Fernando Villavicencio on 9 August.
