April 15 (UPI) — Residents in a suburb of Cape City, South Africa, had a brush with the wild when a hippopotamus escaped from a nature reserve and wandered by the streets.
Grassy Park residents captured images and movies when the hippo broke through a fence on the Rondevlei Nature Reserve and went wandering by residential streets simply after midnight Saturday.
Resident Ashraff Schwartz mentioned police pursued the hippo into the yard of his household’s dwelling.
“My 74-year-old mother watched from inside the home, very scared, because the hippo got here straight for our door. The police have been standing exterior the yard,” he told Independent Online. “It then circled and ran up the street, however earlier than then it broke my wall because it jumped over it. Hippos are harmful animals and it may have killed somebody. The character reserve should put up stronger fencing for our security.”
Native officers mentioned the hippo’s escape was apparently spurred by the animal fleeing an altercation with a dominant male contained in the reserve.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA Wildlife Division mentioned police and Quemic Rangers have been capable of herd the hippo again to the reserve. There have been no accidents reported to people or hippos.
